Indian Grass, Switchgrass and Tall Bluestem will grow to seven feet in height when rainfall occurs at the right intervals. These thick bunch grasses temporarily overshadow the immature Eastern Red Cedar and choke the tiny white astor blossoms. Eventually the Cedars will overtake the grasses if unmanaged.
This field sketch was made on my sister's property in Shawnee County, one of my favorite places in the Flint Hills.
